Bustling, upscale enclave close to the city but away from it all
With a population exceeding 20,000 residents, Millburn is a bustling train-line town on the rise. Its proximity to New York City—30 minutes by car, 45 minutes via train—makes it one of the most convenient commuter cities in New Jersey.
But don't be fooled by its relative closeness to city life. Millburn is a bucolic residential refuge with great schools, excellent parks and outdoor spaces, and mature, large lot neighborhoods that sit along winding, tree-lined streets. Although it’s only a half-hour from the city, it has all the appearances of being a world away.
Within Millburn is the master-planned, ultra-high-end enclave of Short Hills. Though it falls under the Millburn Township umbrella, Short Hills has its own identity and draws many New York and New Jersey elites. Homes in Short Hills are grand affairs, resting on multiple acre lots and commanding well over $5 million in several neighborhoods.

Thanks in large part to its location and two train stations, Millburn and Short Hills prove to be an irresistible draw for those who work in the city but want an escape from its breakneck pace. In addition, the standout schools, incredible outdoor space, and bustling commercial districts— including a burgeoning art and cultural scene—are even more reasons to relocate. Throw in the considerably slower, more relaxed pace of life, and it's not difficult to understand why families relocate here.
Dining, Shopping & Entertainment
Short Hills Mall is the region's go-to shopping destination. Millburn and Short Hills residents have the luxury of it being right in their backyard. The community's other major retail and dining destination can be found at the intersection of Millburn Avenue, Old Short Hills Road, and Main Street.
As the community's de facto downtown, there's plenty to occupy your time during an afternoon or evening out. Some favorite eateries are trendy Millburn Standard, upscale, yet familiar Common Lot, and Millburn Delicatessen, which is famous for its amazingly tasty Sloppy Joe's.
Things to Do
On the surface, Millburn and Short Hills may seem like just another outlying suburb. One only needs to step outside, however, to see the area's natural appeal. Along the community's westernmost border, near Short Hills Mall, is the Canoe Brook Country Club.
Head south, and you'll discover the bucolic Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary. In the heart of Downtown Millburn is the 15-acre Taylor Park, which features a playground, a walking path and a pond, and numerous sports fields. The town also claims a portion of the 2,000-acre South Mountain Reservation and the hiking trails and carriage paths within its borders.
At the southern end of South Mountain is the 1,200-seat Paper Mill Playhouse. This award-winning musical theater brings many classic and contemporary stage productions to life while supporting education in the arts.
